Ah finally it's here! The scooter gods and the weather gods have aligned and given us our first good riding weekend of the spring!

To add to the fun, MB, Bryan, and I will be kicking Saturday Morning off with a little riding tutorial for Bryan, and then on to some serious scooter shopping.

Since my last post about this new scooter process, MB has told me that it will be Bryan riding to work and not her, however she suspects that she might want to join in the fun as well.

So now we set off in search for a ride that is predominantly comfortable to the 6'4ft Bryan, but also suitable to the 5'2ish MB. I imagine this will mean something big and strong enough for him, but just low enough for MB's feet to touch pavement without to much trouble. HAHA This was her complaint about my Vino, she could not comfortably put her feet down when stopped enough to feel stable.

Last night she tells me they are looking at the Buddy, so I assume she is referring to the 125 model.

So off to Motostrada, and Pete's tomorrow to find their ride!

Vmoto Scooters

The stars must be aligning today over Australia, because I can't seem to get away from Vmoto, an Australian Scooter Company that I didn't even know existed before this morning.

First ... This morning I watched a video segment on The Scooter Scoop posted from an Australian TV show featuring the the Vmoto Milan. It was interesting but I didn't think anything of investigating the scooter in the video. It looks nice and euro looking, but I just moved on.

Next ... I went a wandering on the web, and found a guy in Annapolis selling a nice looking scooter. Further investigation led me to search for Vmoto, and finding their hipster, grassroots-ey Genuine style website www.vmoto.com.au

Other results from the same web search brought up a link to Annapolis Scooters LLC which actually takes you to the domain http://www.vmotoscooters.net/, and a very crude website ... it's unclear to me wether this website is being wimsical or was made by a 5 year old. And I'm guessing said dealer is where said craigslister purchased the scoot they are now selling, for $1000.

So any thoughts on this company and its products?

I have to say my excitement over an Auzzie Scooter Company with a cool story, and a cool website, and some cool ads was a little dulled by a sentence in their company bio ...
"Our Motorcycles are manufactured to exacting standards in the Peoples Republic of China" ... a statement one might snicker at given it's ability to be read in the positive light they meant it, or the negative light a person who knows of Chinesse Scooter Reputations.

Never-the-less ... I'm not going to write-off a brand just for that ... and I am quite impressed with two of their more euro-styled models, the Milan 50cc and Montego 125cc. Perhaps a trip to the Annapolis Location is in order as Heidi and I will be down that way visiting.

All the being said ... being an Ad-Man myself, by career, I do appreciate their marketing!
I am always a fan of the clever, straighforward, simple ad, with the obvious and cheesy double-entendre ...

A redeeming little corner of the Vmoto AU website is their merchandise section. It's nice to see (and gives me a better feeling about) a company the takes the time to do a full branding and create accessories to complement not only their main product but the scooter lifestyle.

50cc-ers ... The Tax Man Cometh

As we speak, your representatives (and I use that word loosely) in Annapolis are hard at work to get their hand in your pocket. Currently under consideration in the 2009 session are House Bill 650 / Senate Bill 793 which read virtually the same.

Now I'm no lawyer, and my eyes do go a bit cross when trying to comprehend page after page of legal-speak, but the upshot seems to be that you 50cc-ers, the quietest of our scooter nation, have been squeaking by scot-free as far as the state is concerned, and if this bill passes your free ride is over.

Passage would mean the 50cc-ers would join the rest of us who already bear the burden of state registration, and insurance costs. Your scooter would now be registered with an S-Class and you'll be subject to an annual $35 registration, and an additional $13.50 surcharge. ( i love that "surcharge" bit, just call it a cool $50 and stop bullshitting people! ).
Additionally you'd be required to obtain insurance, now whether the state's new definitions would lead to a new product called Scooter Insurance as opposed to Motorcycle Insurance, which in my mind might be a bit cheaper, remains to be seen.

I have yet to read anything about safety or training classes being required, a task the rest of us Scoots, who the state considers motorcycles, must also bear at a cost of anywhere between $135-300 dollars, that is... if you can find an opening. Thats right folks, in order to ride your scooter legally, you must first learn to ride a motorcycle. That equates to being forced to learn stick when you drive an automatic car. It's moronic! Don't get me wrong, I fully support rider safety courses for everyone, I just don't appreciate being put-upon by the state because they see us as one lump. According to the State of Maryland legislation My Vino 125cc Scooter has more in common with a Harley-Davidson than it's own little brother the Vino 50cc. 75cc's seperate these two scooters and not much else, but according to the state, the 125 is a motorcycle and the 50 is a scooter.

It's not so much that I think anything about this bill is unreasonable, its just the cavalier way our representatives pass legislation over something they don't understand. I totally agree in fact that whatever laws do or do not exsist as it pertains to two-wheeled transportation, every scooter should be treated equally, we drive the same roads, we present the same risks, and the same potential for medical bills and litigation. But lets look at issues and propose laws based on at least a little bit of education on the subject, and to the Delegates and State Senators who have brought this bill fourth, if you need that education feel free to ask those who know. I imagine we'd be more than happy to sit down and talk about the laws that effect the activity we so enjoy. Other wise quite frankly you look like a bunch of typical politicians, arbitrairily taking from the people because you can, and passing our money to the state and special interestes like say insurance companies who will no doubt profit from this legislation.

If you'd like to talk by all means email me through the site, I'd be happy to take a day off of work and drive down to the state house for a constructive conversation. Because as it is, all I see when this current legislation is said and done, the reality of the situation will be the same as any time the govenment clamps down on an activity. Those who do it right will pay, those who don't wish to pay will go through illegal channels and circumvent the the system. Nothing will actually change in the humanity aspect of the problem, but the State's Wallet will get a little thicker, and they can fund a study to study and observe the potentianl usefullness of studying whether or not to replace light bulbs in State Buildings.

For all my tough talk, I'll help you out by getting the ball rolling with ...
Dave's Scooter Laws for the State of Maryland:

1. Any vehicle with two-wheels, a step-through chasis, gas or electric powered, without pedals, is a Scooter.

2. All vehicles as defined in #1 as scooters being operated in the State of Maryland are subject to:

A. State Motor Vehilce Registration and Tags for a fee of $35 plus a $13.50 surcharge ;) annually. (this would actually help you a lot if your scooter was stolen, well at least more so than if you didn't register it)

B. To carry Scooter Insurance (Both Injury and Liablity because I don't want to pay your medical bills and neither should the state. These policies should be somewhat cheaper than motorcycle insurance considering the physical vehicle cost is less, and the speeds and roads traveled are generally less than that of Motorcycles.)

C. To complete a 1 Day rider saftey course, and receive an S-Class License upon successful completetion of the course. (Learn safety, defensive driving, and manuvering skills specific to scooters ... not how to shift a motorcycle)

This is my friend Mary-Beth, "MB" to her friends. She's been one of my closest friends for at least a good decade now, and we actually grew up just a few blocks from each other.

It had come to my attention last weekend that she and husband Bryan were in the car market. New changes in their job locations has brought about the need for a second car.

In discussing this over IM today I brought up the possibility of scooting since their jobs are now within no more than 20 minutes from their home. A suggestion that I thought would be laughed off, but to my surprise MB asked to compile a list of possible two-wheeled ride options for her, as even a brand new Vespa is much cheaper then a crappy used car and a whole lot more fun, not to mention the instant cool factor with coworkers haha.

Her stipulations are that it be a 50cc to avoid the tag/registration and insurance issues, also the thought of more power scares her, and that the scoot by pink. While I don't think I can help with the latter I have decided to be her scoot guide in this process that may add one more to the club.

Please note the Vespa LX50 was not considered as it retails for a whopping $3300 falling well outside the price range of MB and the five other models.

Hi Everyone!

A little administrative business to take care of. It has come to my attention the existence of Google Groups. This being a service from Google that allows you to create websites for common interests.

This past summer in an effort to get a riding group together I formed a ScootMaryland Riding Group at MeetUp.com. The attempt was fairly successful and the service was very nice although it does come at a monthly membership cost. It seems to me MeetUp's Serivce has the idea in mind of a money making venture at it's core which ScootMaryland is not. So in the interest of Dave not spending money needlessly (because Google offers essentially the same thing for free haha) I have moved the group there. So please now find us HERE. Please take a minute and create a profile and say hi, and I hope to see you all in the spring for some fun rides! In the next days and weeks I'll be tweaking the page, and of course I'll keep you up to date on new developments.

The more I keep coming back to the PiaggioUSA website, the more I keep looking at their BV Tourer 500. I used to go there to drool at the MP3 500, which I still do of course, but at $9K it's a little out of realistic expectation.
I used to think that my next logical step in terms of my two-wheeled evolution was a motorcycle, mainly because of it's increased power, and foray into yet another two-wheeled society. To me the two world's are different, not better or worse, just different. I'm not sure anything illustrates that better then the Orange County Chopper segment a few posts back that involved the Tuttels and the New York Scooter Club. These people are similar, they get a long, but they are different and little snippents of contempt can be detected every now and then, but always kept "in the family" of those who ride on two wheels. That is to say the two wheeled respect is usually always given by each member of the family even though big brother likes to crap on little brother every now and again just because he can. haha

But I digress and bring it back to the BV. This thing is powerful! At 460cc's it's going to blow away most entry level motorcycles. Plus it keeps the carefree wimsy, and euro style of a scooter. Is this my next evo?

As I was wondering through the web today I noticed there seems to be some question about whether scooters are legal at all in Baltimore City Proper. As someone who commutes his 125cc State Registered and Insured Scooter from his home in Baltimore County to his work in Baltimore City daily, I was a bit alarmed that perhaps I had been breaking the law twice a day most weekdays since last June. A quick google for Baltimore City Codes brought me to this pdf of legal-speak pertaining to the matter.

Baltimore City Code as it relates to two wheeled vehicles. Scroll down to Sub.40

If you ask me this law is made to give police the right to repossess dirt bikes from the reckless youth who zip through Baltimore City Neighborhoods, unconcerned for their and others safety... reckless, unregistered, and uninsured.

In fact in one of the first sections it says:
“Dirt bike” does not include: (i) a moped, as defined in State Transportation Article § 11-134.1; or (ii) a motor scooter, as defined in State Transportation Article § 11-134.4 {§ 11-134.5}.

So I'm pretty sure we're safe, this law was not meant to target those of us doing it right.

The wimpy winter that just wouldn't leave

This winter really hasn't been bad. A few minor snow "events" as the news likes to call them.

As the potential of spring and riding again gets closer, and the more blogs of those who are already back riding I read ... the desire to get back out there builds.

We've had a few really pleasant days recently in Central Maryland, the flip-flops even made a brief appearance this weekend, but the nice weather just can't seem to hold on.

This past winter I didn't get around to investing in serious cold/bad weather gear so I feel like I need the weather back in the 50's to feel comfortable going out for long rides again.

With the memory of these pleasant days in mind, I decided to pop over to weather.com. Unfortunately my hopes were dashed!

The disconnect in electronically connecting

A hardly noticeable difference in my blog today, but a big difference in my head for some reason. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you may notice the hit counter is gone. It took me a while to work up the nerve to do this, to remove that convenient little item that reassured me what I was doing here was important to someone other than myself. But maybe I have come to a realization that bloggers come to ... it's not about them, it's about me. It's a cathersis and an enjoyment ... not a popularity contest. It's time to blog for the love of the game.

A thought has been occuring to me lately the more and more I get sucked into social networking sites by friends ... that thought is ... I really I don't need to have my existence validated by friends by posting a status message on facebook every time I fart and having them comment. By nature I am very social, I love my friends and family, and to me they are what make my life as great as it is, but this "electronic existence status" is begining to wear on me ... frankly it can be exhausting!

So long story short ... I have come to the realization that this blog is for me, for my benefit, to document my experiences and memories ... a way of letting me out, and not the world in.
But of course a blog does let the world in. If this were truly an introspective venture, it would be in a photo album and on a paper journal in my office. So clearly there is desire to share life with those who share my interest. And when I think about it, I do want to share ... I want to "meet" those who share my interests and see and read about what they experience and share what I have.

I wonder if this is the just an ongoing struggle of duality that bloggers must bear?

Piaggio recalling 740 Scarabeo 100 scooters

Piaggio is recalling 740 model year 2008-2009 Aprilia Scarabeo 100 motorcycles. In the evaporative emission system there are hoses connecting the fuel tank to the charcoal canister through which the evaporative emission passes. It has shown that the emission hoses to the canister were pinched and/or crimped. In other cases the hoses in and out of the charcoal canister were installed backwards, the roll over valve for the fuel tank was installed incorrectly, and in other cases there was dirt in the carburetor and still others had faulty float valves in the carburetor.

Consequence:

The engine may flood with fuel causing difficulty in starting and the possibility of stalling. It is also possible for fuel to leak from the carburetor onto the ground. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.

Remedy:

Dealers will double check the installation of the evaporative emission systems hoses and components to will ensure that there are no restrictions. The emission system hose will be re-routed and the installation of one way valves as per approved re-routing instructions will ensure that the system is assembled and operating correctly. The remedy is free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during February 2009. Owners may contact Piaggio at 1-212-380-4431.

Super Bowl day drinkers' service started with single scooter

Scooter Patrol, which offers rides year-round, will be at Tsunami Sushi in Sunset Beach on Sunday.

SUNSET BEACH – Beer and junk food seem to be synonymous with Super Bowl Sunday, but a local nonprofit warns that getting behind the wheel after the big game could ruin all the fun.

Scooter Patrol, an organization that looks to keep drunk drivers off the road year-round, will offer transportation services Sunday to patrons of Tsunami Sushi in Sunset Beach.

And the offer is more than tempting. It's free. Your car goes with you. You arrive safely home and keep other drivers safe in the process, organizers said.

"Super Bowl Sunday is one of the worst days of the year for drunk driving," said Scooter Patrol founder Anthony Panzica. "We're looking forward to making our community safer… by providing free rides home.''

Panzica, 42, of Seal Beach, started the patrol as a one-man show in 2003 using an old scooter with a light duct-taped to the front.

His endeavor quickly grew as friends stepped up to help with the service and sponsors started showing interest.

"This is my way of helping my community," Panzica said. "It's really heartening and humbling to be in a position where we're saving people's lives."

Today, GoPed provides the scooters, Scott's Motor Sports offers maintenance services and 15 volunteers are signed up as drivers.

Although the Scooter Patrol will focus on Sunset Beach and Seal Beach on Sunday, they also provide services for Huntington Beach, Huntington Harbour and Newport Beach from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Friday and Saturday. They also offer a reservation service for people going out on off days.

The Scooter Patrol usually visits bars early on the weekends to let patrons know of the service. They field about six to 10 calls a night, on average, and pick up people from Main Street in Huntington Beach to Belmont Shore in Long Beach.

Tsunami Sushi is one of the Patrol's early supporters. This will be the sixth year the Scooter Patrol has offered its services at the restaurant's annual Sunday-Funday Super Bowl Party, when the Arizona Cardinals take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Scooter Patrol will have a booth at the restaurant ready to cart away intoxicated football fans up to 10 miles from the bar. They also will offer their on-call service in other Sunset Beach and Seal Beach locations.

Designated drivers take bar-goers home in their own car, return the keys then zip back via scooter.

If safety isn't a priority for a partygoer, perhaps avoiding an expensive driving-under-the-influence charge would be enough incentive to take Scooter Patrol up on their offer, organizers said.

The Office of Safety and Traffic this year was awarded about $165,000 in grants for law enforcement agencies to step up their DUI checkpoint efforts in eight Orange County cities including Tustin and Laguna Beach, according to Register archives.

OST named Super Bowl Sunday as one of the premier holidays for police to host a sobriety checkpoint -- right up there with St. Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve.

Scooter Patrol also offers a reservation service for people going out on off days.

Teen scooter riders risk lives in M27 madness

THIS is the shocking moment when two reckless teenagers put their lives at risk by riding their scooters along a busy Hampshire motorway.

With a blatant disregard for the law, the two youngsters took to the westbound carriageway of the M27 on their bikes – with L plates.

One motorist couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted the two scooters joining the motorway.

Semi hits and kills scooter driver

A semi tractor trailer struck a motorized scooter last night in Henderson, Ky., killing the driver of the scooter.

The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of relatives.

Kentucky State Police said Earl Buckner, 69, of Yale, Ill., was traveling south on the U.S. 41 Bypass near the Zion exit at 11:20 p.m. when he rear-ended the scooter.

The victim was thrown from the scooter and pronounced dead at the scene by the Henderson County coroner.

No charges were filed; police said the scooter was the type of vehicle which should not have been traveling on the parkway.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Using a pickup stolen from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, two men backed into a motorcycle shop and made off with three cycles, police said.

The theft occurred early Saturday just before 2 a.m., police said. Surveillance video showed the men backing up into the west wall of Pompano Pat's, 910 W. International Speedway Blvd., entering the shop and wheeling out three cycles with the keys attached to each one.

The three pilfered rides were described as two blue and white Zhecheng dirt bikes and a 2009 black and yellow Zhejiang scooter with a Pompano Pat's sticker on it.

The stolen truck is described as a black, 2006 Dodge Ram with Florida tag T80INA.

Investigators said all three scooters sustained some damage because they were tossed into the back of the pickup. An anonymous caller reported the truck with the three scooters was heading north on Adams Street, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Daytona Beach Detective Kellie Fishpaugh, 386-671-5245.

The Best Scooter out there APRILIA SCRABEO 150 - $3300 (Baltimore City/Towson)

Has just over 7000 miles and is in excellent condition! Yellow in color and was just serviced at the end of summer. Includes medium windshield. Starts up on an electric starter. Has temp gauge, fuel gauge, and oil light. The windshield is an authentic Scarabeo medium windshield that is very difficult to find (they don't make it anymore) and costs $200+.

Freeway legal, 16" tires (most scooter have 12" tires or smaller), wide comfy 2 up seats (seat is brand new), glove storage compartment. This scooter is more like an automatic motorcycle and has the power for it! The most powerful 150cc in it's class (Speedometer goes to 100mph and i know it cruises pretty solid at 75mph on the freeway). I've ridden Yamaha's and Honda's and this bike is way more powerful and solidly built. The motor is made by Vespa and is the Harley's of scooters. This scooter is really powerful but not as gigantic as the Suzuki Burgman. I am including the Lock trunk box as well as the exhaust kit which was recently installed ( has a great sound) If you hate tinkering on bikes, then this scooter is for you! you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap no name brand scooter, you may find yourself looking for replacement parts within the same year. That happened to 2 of my friends. I've NEVER had a problem with this scooter.

There are some small scraps on the body from regular riding and a scrap under the bike from parking to close to a curb other than that it is in great shape has never been dropped or layed down.

This scooter has had 1 previous owner my boss an attorney in Towson and has had regular service at Moto Strada the origianal dealership it was pourcheased from.

I hate to sell this and would love to take it with me but i am moving out west for School and don't have room to take it with. I will greatly miss this fantastic machine.

Annapolis police kick-start scooter-theft-prevention effort

City residents may get a more watchful eye on their beloved scooters, thanks to a new program through the Annapolis Police Department.

Yesterday, police kicked off an effort to help reduce the number of scooters that are stolen on city streets, and to help return those that are stolen to the rightful owners. The program is modeled after the "Watch Your Car" program, which is run by the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council.

Under the scooter program, owners give their serial numbers and other information to police and get a sticker to put on their scooters. The sticker gives officers probable cause to pull the scooter driver over at any time of the day. This is because scooter thefts happen more frequently during the day, said Bob Emory, a retired lieutenant from the Annapolis Police Department who currently serves as a vehicle-theft prevention specialist.

"A lot of scooters are stolen during the day," he said. "It's a little bit of a different pattern from automobiles."

In 2008, there were 125 vehicles stolen in the city, and 41 of them were motor scooters.

The scooter program runs similarly to the car program that allows a police officer to pull over a car between 1 and 5 a.m. that is registered with the program and stickered. Once again, it gives the officer probable cause to pull the car over and make sure the owner is driving. The program is ideal for people who do not drive in the early morning hours, because many car thefts happen in the overnight hours.

The "Watch Your Scooter" program is funded through the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council, and is supported by the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund.

"Police recognize the problem," Mr. Emory said.

Often, police recover the stolen scooter, but because scooters are not registered with the Maryland Vehicle Administration, it is difficult to find the rightful owners.

Maj. Ray Presley, from the Maryland Theft Prevention Council, said the scooter program is the first of its kind, adding that scooter thefts are a problem because they are popular in Annapolis.

"We're very excited about it," he said.

The Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund, based in Annapolis, provided the stickers for the program, which will be placed on the front and back of scooters.

"We saw a need ... and we wanted to come out and be part of the solution," said Joseph M. Asplen, special investigations unit manager.

George Steiner, owner of V-Moto Scooters, said customers have heard about scooter thefts being a problem, and he will offer the scooter program information to anyone who buys a scooter there.

"We're hoping this will deter it," he said.

For now, V-Moto Scooters is the only store in Annapolis that has the program registration, but Mr. Emory will be contacting other stores to stock them up with registrations, too. And people interested in the program may also get registrations at the police station.

Gerry Webb, the shop manager at V-Moto Scooters, was the first person to register his scooter in the program.

"I see all the scooters that get stolen ..." he said. "Half the time, the scooters don't get back to the original owners."

He said he knows officers may pull him over while he's driving his own scooter, but it's worth it in the long run to protect his investment.

"Let them stop us," Mr. Webb said. "It just gives them a better way to do their job and we're all better off."

I was reading about the new Vespa GTS 300 Super that debuted recently at the New York Motorcycle Show. It has great specs, it's their most powerful model ever, it's getting a lot of talk and yeah it looks great ...

well, it looks like a Vespa ...

wait a minute, what is bothering me here?!?

By and large it looks like every other model they sell. Sure there are a few variations in style but on the whole it looks like every other Vespa in their line up!

Now I realize I may be about to go against the Holy Church of the Italian Wasp, and those who are perfect are not to be questioned, and why change something that isn't broken, and who am I to question the all mighty Vespa ... but ... but I look at your site and I look at your 09 line up and I'm bored ... snore, yawn, comatose!!!

No doubt you've noticed that there are companies that employee scooters as advertising campaigns, towing large fancy bill boards.

I've looked into this concept myself on whims of starting such a business, but the setup money required tallies into the 10's of thousands. So for those of us who dream big but need to start small here is the answer...

If you're interested in getting started right away, this product is available from a guy in Israel for $199. But I'm sure if we put out minds to it we could fabricate something just as nice.

This is a 2004 Geely JL-QT50-15. It currently has 201 miles on it which isn't a lot at all for a scooter, There are miner problems on the moped It needs a tune up, the headlight doesn't work,neither does the starter button but i was told that it was something to do with a fuse and the left handle bar mechanism is a little loose. Besides that it is a nice scooter it has disc brakes in the front and drum in the back it also has nice aluminum chrome rims. The motor has a new carburetor. All things that are broke would be a easy fix. So what we are looking at here is a 4 year old, cheap chinese scooter, which because of the name we'll assume is a 50 cc, and while it has low mileage, it has multiple broken parts, but even that's not too bad because unless you can get the starter fixed, you won't even need to worry about what else it broken. And $650!?!?! Seriously, Seriously!?!?! .... that thing better not have cost you more than $899 new at PepBoys ... and you're trying to get back $650 fours years later with multiple broken parts!?!!? Geely scooters dogged by low quality, sets bad precedent for cars?

If the quality of products put out by Geely's scooter division are any indication, potential buyers of Geely cars are in for a nightmare in which vehicles break after a short period and no parts are available to fix them, according to WOOD-TV.

One individual who bought a Geely scooter for $1K says the scooter died after two months, and the parts to fix it just aren't available. A Geely spokesman said that while he's not familiar with the scooter division, he could guarantee that the cars that will, they hope, one day be sold in the United States will be of much higher quality and will have the infrastructure necessary to provide parts and repairs in a timely manner.

PS ... I love the fact that this article not only dogs the Geely line, but features a picture of the exact model your selling!

First, Roketa is probably one of the worst Chinese scooters you can buy.

It will NOT even come close to 80mph, you'll be lucky to get over 55 mph.

Sure, it'll run on 89 octane, until the detonation destroys the piston.

The so-called ABS is a joke... the best it will do is divert the braking pressure AWAY from the caliper, causing you to crash!

If you are stupid enough to buy this piece of crap, be sure to get all the details IN WRITING and SIGNED by the seller, including the DOT certification papers, the top speed, and the warranty. To get around, Pitt rented a Yamaha Nouvo scooter, with Jolie perched on the back. Of course, the paparazzi snapped away — and suddenly, free advertising for Yamaha turned into major sales.

Japanese renowned manufacturer Honda forayed into the market soon after, debuting a sporty-looking Air Blade model in April last year that domestic motorbike traders said was a breakthrough in design for automatic scooters. Yamaha has since answered Honda’s introduction with a revamped Nouvo — but the race is on and other manufacturers like Piaggio and Kymco are adding to the competition.

Federal Government Proposes 100% Tariff On European Motorcycles Under 500cc. U.S.T.R. Looks To Impose Huge Tax In Retaliation For Euro Refusal To Lift Imported American Beef Ban

In a move typical of current short-sighted federal government thinking, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative-the federal agency responsible for developing and recommending U.S. trade policy to the President-has proposed imposing a 100 percent tariff on all European motorcycles and scooters under 500cc engine displacement as part of a retaliation for the European Union's ongoing import ban on American beef from cattle that have been treated with growth hormones. EU officials haven't lifted the 20-year-old ban despite a World Trade organization order to end it, so the U.S. wants to impose $116.8 million in import duties to equal the amount of money it claims the U.S beef industry loses each year because of the ban.

U.S. trade officials are looking at a list of more than 100 European goods for the possible imposition of 100 percent import duties. Included on the hit list are motorcycles and scooters with engines displacing 51cc to 500cc, representing popular on- and off-highway machines from brands such as Aprilia, Beta, BMW, Fantic, Gas Gas, Husaberg, Husqvarna, KTM, Montesa, Piaggio, Scorpa, Sherco, TM and Vespa.

A little bit of cold weather doesn't keep Joe Bassetti from riding his motorcycle from his Vineland home to his job at the Showboat Casino-Hotel in Atlantic City.

Bassetti, 49, started using his 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail Standard instead of his 1997 Toyota pickup truck to travel to work in April 2007.

The switch saved him lots of money - gas prices were climbing and he was spending about $75 per week to commute.

But, the price was right when he rode the motorcycle - about $25 weekly.

The only two months he didn't ride it was January and February of this year, in the dead of winter. He has been riding his bike to work this month at a time when most people are turning up the heat in their cars.

"Naturally, I'm a little bit more beat up. It's more tiring to bike in the cold weather. I will go to bed earlier," said Bassetti, who is not only more tired at night, but he heads to bed earlier because he needs more time in the morning to get ready. "Immediately, I feel cold as soon as I leave the house."

With the rise in gas prices during the last two years, thousands of people have purchased scooters, mopeds and motorcycles to save money.

In this state, the number of yearly motorcycle registrations increased from 142,768 in September 2005 to 162,130 this past September, according to the Motor Vehicle Commission statistics.

But, when buying a two-wheel vehicle in the heat of the spring or summer, the cold and bad weather of winter may be far from the mind.

Several local motorcycle and scooters riders don't regret the purchase of their more fuel-efficient mode of transportation even though the cost of gas has dropped below $2 gallon for regular, but at some point, they plan to put their two-vehicles away for either all or some part of the winter.

Ben Petrovic, owner of Atlantic County Harley-Davidson of Galloway Township, estimates that 80 percent of riders stay off the roads in the late fall and winter.

But Bassetti is determined to ride as often as possible.

During this time of year, Bassetti makes adjustments to ride his motorcycle. It takes about five minutes longer to get ready in the mornings, and he is already rising at 4:30 a.m. to make it on time for his shift, which starts at 6 a.m.

The saddlebag on Bassetti's motorcycle holds his accessories. His helmet with a face shield has a liner in it for added warmth.

Bassetti has to make sure getting dressed to ride is last thing he does before leaves his home because his winter motorcycle apparel will make him sweat if he stays in the house too long, and then he will be even colder when he walks outside.

The bellman checks the Weather Channel before he falls a sleep at night. He checks it twice in the morning, once when out of the shower and again before he leaves his home. Even with the adjustments for cold-weather riding, Bassetti believes it was worth it to buy the motorcycle.

"I love motorcycling," said Bassetti, who dresses in layers in the fall as opposed to a heavy overcoat. "I'm hooked."

Petrovic said his store carries a full line of winter motorcycle apparel and cold weather riding gear. For winter apparel, he sells pants, gloves, jackets and shirts. For cold weather riding gear, there are devices that allow clothes and even the handle bar bags that cover the rider's hands to be heated from the bike's operation.

Similar to the polar bear club that jumps in the ocean at the start of the New Year because they love the ocean, there is a polar bear motorcycle-riding group. Last year, between 25 to 30 people came together to ride, Petrovic said. He knows people who don't own a car, only a motorcycle, but during the wintertime, that person need to hop a ride with a friend to travel to and from work or take public transportation if the weather is too bad, Petrovic said.

"Riding gear has become so sophisticated that the day of putting newspaper inside your leather jacket to keep the wind out is over," Petrovic said.

Despite the progress made in winter apparel and cold weather gear, some people don't like the cold. For them, the dropping temperatures of late fall or winter takes all the pleasure out of riding a two-wheeled vehicle, even for a short distance.

When the weather was warm, Michelle Carney-Ray of Egg Harbor Township, could be seen dressed in a suit as she rode her scooter to her job as assistant principal of the Fernwood Middle School.

Carney-Ray purchased her Piaggio BV500 in May. She's happy with the scooter, but she got a chilling dose of reality this fall.

"I didn't think I would be as cold as I was," said Carney-Ray, 37, who last rode her scooter two miles to school in November and added it will probably not come back out again until March. "I have no windshield."

Carney-Ray has an excuse for not anticipating how cold it could be riding in November. She says her husband, rides his motorcycle year round and that he "doesn't mind the cold as much as I do."

Betty Bentz of Fairton, Cumberland County, has a longer commute, which takes her home to working as a teacher at Veterans Memorial Intermediate School in Vineland. When riding in colder weather, Bentz, who rides with the Fire Base Nam Motorcycle Club, wears Under Armour cold gear on her upper half along with a sweatshirt and leather jacket. She also wears either stockings or Under Armour on her bottom half along with jeans and chaps.

Bentz's motorcycle ride from home to work takes between 20 and 30 minutes one way. She is probably done riding until the spring.

"Below 40 degrees, I don't ride. From being out when it gets colder, it's really tough," said Bentz, who purchased her Honda VTX1300R in January 2007. "It takes a long time to get warm when you get home."

The 28th annual International Motorcycle Show, rolling into the Long Beach Convention Center today, caters to the crowd that wants its bikes bigger, better and faster. But, in a nod to changing times, there's a new feature this year: a scooter pavilion.

The three-day event is putting a focus on riders who want to commute on two wheels -- new and returning riders who couldn't care less about the flash and power that have dominated the industry for the past decade.

With the hectic nature of my schedule, being sick, very cold morning weather, and ever present rain in some part of the forecast for the last few weeks, I have been automobile bound and I am starting to have scooter withdrawl!

So i noticed that there was a section on the Motor Cycle Show Website about getting media credentials, and I figured it never hurts to ask, right?

I wrote a nice email explaining that I had a scooter blog and riding group, and would be very interested to attend the show (especially the scooter pavilion) and then post about it.

With an eye towards the latest and greatest, I decided to take a look around the internet at scooters to come, and see if there are any standouts for 2009.

My first pick for next year is stylish and similar in look to my Vino, The Aprilia Mojito 150. I tend to lean towards the retro or classic styling and the Mojito 150 seems to build on the lines the Vino has been sporting. Geez they even named it after an alcoholic drink.

I try to keep this blog focused on our two wheeled fun, and not so much on the serious world around us. Riding is a joy, an escape from the world. When you ride all you see is the beautiful world around you, and all you hear is the wind in your ears. There is no real world when you ride, there is just you and the road. I write all this as a preface to the fact that I am going to get serious in this entry. I don't like to, but every now and then my anger at the process needs to be expressed, and this time it happens to relate to the scooter life.

Over the past 3-4 years we have seen gas prices sky rocket to record levels culminating at $4-$5 a gallon this summer. These prices got to a point of absurdity and the people got angry. Why they got to this point is not up for debate in the entry, I frankly don't care why, and Republican Bill will blame Democrat Jim and visa versa and they'll blame each other and those they elected while the true villans will get away scott free as the peasants squabble amongst themselves. That is the nature of our political system, but thats a whole other rant.

So we were being gouged for gas and the people were angry. Some of those angry people sought out ways to offset their financial burden from petrol. There were small personal steps like scooters, motorcycles, and hybrids, but there were larger steps too. They say necessity is the mother of invention and so it was that real steps were taken to move towards alternative power sources. Real companies, real money, and real investors were put forth to develop wind, solar, bio fuels, nuclear, geothermal, clean coal etc etc etc. It has even become a big part of this year's Presidential Campaigns, but don't hold your breath because each of those idiots since Nixon has promised energy independence from the middle east, and here we are 40 years later.

The need was there, the reason was there, the people were there, the money was there, full steam ahead and away from oil! And then it happened. I'm sure you noticed it. The gas station you drive by on your way to work everyday, well look at that?!?! ... its prices are coming down!?!? Penny by penny, day by day, gas prices are coming down. Suddenly and miraculously the suppliers realized oops we had way more supply than we thought we did, we can lower the price now.

Reader stop, stop now, fight the urge to tell me that this is supply and demand and the market naturally correcting itself. If you feel this way please go get a rolled up a newspaper, stand in front of a mirror and repeat "no no" as you strike yourself with it until these idiot thoughts leave your head.

This IS market manipulation at its best! There are natural market forces at work here but they are the result of OPEC's need for self preservation. Lets think as if we were them. Oh the world is angry with us about our prices, the world is seeking ways to free themselves from our product. So much so they are starting to put serious and concerted efforts behind these tree-hugging ideas. What actions can we take to quell this anger and stop these efforts? We can play a little game of dominos ... gas prices go down, more dollars in wallet, anger goes down, people become comfortable and complacent as their budget is eased, complacent people don't make waves, without waves there is no force to push for alternative energy, investors sense the slowing of enthusiasm and pull their money, and finally our endeavors into alternative powers sources and fuels get moved to the back burner until the next crisis. Think I am wrong? Think this isn't happening today as we speak? Go read a newspaper. Many alternative energy projects are loosing their funding as we speak, because we have been sated by cheaper gas.

In the end all I want to say to you is this: Don't forget why we did and do the things we do to remove ourselves from oil. Don't forget what $4 a gallon gas feels like. Don't forget how important it is to explore these alternative energy sources. And most importantly, no matter which useless politician gets to be president, don't let them forget what they promised you to get there.

It's energy efficient, it's clean, compact and simple, and, above all, it's very cool.

All of these factors could be significant in getting people to adopt a lightweight, electrically powered scooter designed by William J. Mitchell, the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences, and several of his students in MIT's Smart Cities Group, in collaboration with SYM, a major scooter manufacturer in Taiwan, and ITRI, Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute. A prototype of the new design was a hit at the Milan Auto Show, where it was unveiled earlier this month.

Motor scooters are a very popular form of transportation in Asian and European cities, Mitchell said, because they provide convenient, inexpensive transportation. But conventional scooters, using inefficient two-stroke gas engines, are also a source of local air pollution. The new design "was all about providing a clean, green, silent electric scooter that would provide, even better, the same kind of urban mobility," he said.

As an added bonus, the simplicity of the electric design, which eliminates the powertrain by putting motors directly inside each of the two wheels, made it possible to design the scooter so that it could be folded up to about half its size, making it even easier to store in crowded urban environments.

"In very dense urban areas where scooter parking is a big issue, the small size is a big advantage. It makes it possible to park it in narrow streets and alleys," Mitchell said. When folded, it can also be easily wheeled along like a trolley suitcase, and is no larger, making it easy to take along on trains or even indoors.

The simplified design could bring down production costs significantly, he said. "A typical gas scooter has about 1,000 parts, but ours only has 150."

Mitchell and his team envision the scooters being provided in racks at convenience stores, train stations and other convenient city locations as one-way rentals. Users would swipe a credit card to remove a scooter from the rack (in which its batteries would be kept fully charged up), unfold it for the trip and then fold it up again to deposit at another rack at the destination.

The viability of the one-way-rental business model has been demonstrated in Paris, Mitchell said, where a company has recently begun a similar service with 1,000 bicycles.

The design of the scooter is also important in getting the new concept adopted. "People want to look cool," Mitchell said, and the folding scooter was highly praised at the Milan show, where vehicle design is especially prized.

The team now plans to further develop the prototype to come up with two different production models. One will be a refinement of the folding scooter introduced in Milan, and the other will be an even simpler model, without the folding capability, to be produced for regions where low cost is most important and space restrictions are not as crucial.

The whole design project was accomplished in eight months, "from a blank sheet to a built concept," Mitchell said. The multigenerational, cross-disciplinary team included a core group of four graduate students along with several others who made contributions, and a group of MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program students. One key to their ability to accomplish the innovative design, he said, was that "they don't know what's 'impossible,' so they just go out and do it."

My first cold weather ride

Well I did it this morning! I got up, I looked at the cold darkness, I went outside, and put the key in the scooter and let it warm up. No turning back now, it was time to leave.

I put on jeans, and a very heavy fleece pull over, and my UA gloves and took off. Within a mile of leaving the house the cold, 30 some degree/40mph wind had cut through everything I was wearing. Within just 5-10 minutes the uncomfortable cold feeling began to turn to pain. Any part of me that was catching the wind simply hurt especially my fingers. And of course this was the morning I was catching all green lights (usually a good thing) but now I was getting no breaks, no chances to stop and rub my hands together.

By the end of the ride I half expected to remove my gloves and find frostbite. I know this sounds a little extreme and I am a pretty tolerant person when it comes to pain, but even for me this hurt, and was no fun at all!

I guess this calls for (as my coworkers smugly kept telling me all morning) a trip to the bike shop this weekend from some more adequate cold weather gear. I am thinking some more serious winter leather gloves, a jacket, and maybe a full face. Oh well, its a small price to pay for being able to keep scooting. If theres an upside to suffering this morning it is that I get to enjoy a sunny 60 degree ride on the way home!

Well the ScootCoupe is the 2004 invention of Panther Motors, and is primarily designed to be a full rental vehicle for people in vacation areas. And while its called a scooter because of it's three wheeled set up and steering, I still think its a pretty big stretch to call this thing a scooter!

But all the power to them, and if this strikes your fancy and have the expendable income by all means check them out HERE. But I will laugh at you when a cop pulls you over thinking you just hijacked an amusement part.

Their concept occupies "a half-way house between the world of the scooter and the car." ... and I don't disagree with that statement, however I don't think its a positive one.

This thing looks like a smart car cut down the middle, it looks like a scooter in a hamster ball, its the bastard son of both that inherited all the bad traits, and has few innovations to show from its merging of two worlds. Its a car without the shelter and storage, and its a scooter with claustrophobia. Sorry Peugeot, car drivers want the luxuries of a car, and scooter drivers want the wind in their hair, this thing is just an exercise in sci-fi fantasy, and has little practicality as the evolution of car and scoot.

Who's a Chicken?!?!?

OK so last week we returned from our honeymoon, and it was back to business as usual. About the middle of the week I began to notice the faint but real signs of that first cold of the season, and sure enough by this past weekend I was a full blown mess. Which has led to my decision for the comfort of my nice warm truck for the past three morning commutes.

Each morning this week I have gotten up and looked outside at the dark coldness, gone through my morning routine of waking myself up and shaking off the cold symptoms with the usual array of cold products, and then having to make a decision about what to drive to work. I think to myself its probably not good for the recovery process to go out zipping along in the 35-40 degree weather at 40mph, and so each morning I have opted for the easy, heated, hot coffee toting, comfort of the truck.

And perhaps karmicly I am passed by at least one fellow scoot bundled up in their winter jacket zipping off to work and putting me to shame. I have to say there is a definite level of guilt sneaking up on me when I ask myself: am I trucking because of my cold, or using it as an excuse to stay out of the cold? I love my scooter, I love riding, but each morning this week when I stare out at the dark coldness waiting for me and a decision has to be made my love of scooting has not been able to over power my love of windows and a heater, and I am left to wonder... When my cold leaves, will my bravery return?

Hey, lady in the blue van.

Yeah, you, the middle-aged gal with the messy brown hair and the scowl who kept honking behind me as we traveled north on Downing Street, between 11th and 13th avenues, on a recent Wednesday morning, around 9:15-ish.

I've got news for you:

I'm not a bike.

I'm more like a motorcycle (whose driver wouldn't have pulled over to let you pass either).

I can zip along at a pretty good clip if need be. But for my safety and yours, I abide by the rules of the road — just as you should — and try to keep to the speed limit.

Unlike you.

I also get 60 to 80 miles per gallon, unlike your fuel-guzzling monstrosity, which probably gets 18 mpg in the city, tops. (Not that I'm bragging or anything.)

So, please try to share the road with me and keep your hostility in check, will ya? Scooter riders like me are here to stay. In fact, you'll likely be seeing a lot more of us as the economy tanks.

And we're happy to share the road with you. Your disapproval, however, won't reduce our numbers. (Frankly, flipping me off as you roar past on the right, going 45 in a 30 mph zone, is kinda scary. Your vehicle outweighs mine by a ton or two.)

Have some respect and common decency. Cars and scooters have been co-existing for decades now in Europe. Consider it a cosmopolitan thing to do.

With Colorado's temperate climate, it's a sure bet that you'll be seeing more of us on the roads.

Get used to it.

I'm not sure if anyone else has had this experience, but I wanted to make note of a new power my scooter has developed....

It can bring up the sun! Seriously, I get up in the morning and it's dark. I turn my scooter on, and let it idle for a few minutes now that it's colder, soon there after the sky gets a little brighter. I start my ride to work, and it gets brighter... the further I go the higher the sun gets... and when I finally park at work, the sun is up!

After and incredible two weeks away from real life, one for our wedding in Bethany Beach and the second for our honeymoon in Jamaica, I return with a wife, a tan, and a ton of great memories!

I meant to begin posting at the beginning of this week, but the re-adjustment to real life, catching up at work, and other post-wedding duties have left me with little time or energy. I do want to make note of a thoughtful scooter related gift my mother-in-law gave me at out rehearsal dinner. In addition to a beautiful watch which I wear everyday now, and a ring to match my brother-in-law's (the other pongratz outsider), I received a novelty European Union Deutchland Scooter License Plate (it may help to know my inlaws live in Germany). I just wanted to make note of it and say it was very thoughtful and I appreciate it very much!

Well my answer would be an alternating merging of the two lanes. Left, Right, Left, Right and so on.

This post is dedicated to the at least one Jack Ass a morning who, travels West Bound Putty Hill Ave just past the intersection with Loch Raven Blvd, instead of just politely executing a simple alternate merge, glues themselves to the bumper of the car in front of them, and would rather run a fellow human being off the road that get to work 12 feet slower.

The colder mornings bring more accessories...

If you're like me and you ride to work in the morning, you may have noticed about a week or so ago those morning temps are slowly shifting from low 60's to high 50's. As someone who is allowed the luxury of wearing a t-shirt and shorts to work this slight change made all the difference in the world.

57 degress at 40 mph+ in shorts = CHILLY!

OK, no problem, wear heavier clothes, duh, simple... but what about my hands? The past few mornings when I get into the office there is a noteable malfunction of my fingers as I try to begin typing. I could pull out my fancy leather gloves from the back of the closet, but that just doesn't strike me right. So I go a Googling and come across a possible solution, Baltimore's own master of weather and sport specific clothing Under Armor.

Well this morning was truth time. Nice chilly morning, strap the gloves on and go for my 25 minute commute. Let me preface everything by saying these are nice and well made gloves, whether they work for me or not should not be a reflection on UA as I am not using them for what they are made for.

Everything starts out fine, the gloves are working! I feel the wind but my hands are staying warm. Gradually through the ride however I do feel the cold start on my finger tips, and by the time I get to work my hands are cold. Now not nearly as cold as the would be bare, but for cold wind on a scooter for an extended period of time these gloves are a no-go. For slightly chilly days or just general use I do like their feel, flexibility, style, and grip, so I think I'll be hanging on to them.

Come on Under Armor you've got a division for every sport know to man, where's the riders line?

Side complaint! The discrepency in the day's highs and lows are too great! Who is in charge of that? It's like do I want to dress for the afternoon and freeze in the morning, or dress for the morning and sweat in the afternoon. And yes of course I realize I could change clothes at work, add and remove as needed, but I bought a scooter to simplify my life, so can someone please get on this and fix these 20 degree temperature swings, or at least shift them to a 20 degree swing that is either cold and colder or warm and warmer.

Still on my radar is the MP3 500, and it's kept there by coming across things like Motorweek, who has been airing a segment this week featuring The Bat Scooter.

A fun little fact I did pick up was this thing can lock it's two front wheels at a dead stop... meaning as you come to a red light, bring the two front wheels back to a straight up and down position, push a button and they lock in that position, allowing the driver to keep their feet up off the road!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The FBI is seeking a man dubbed the "Scooter Bandit" who is accused of robbing two area banks.The suspect was seen on surveillance tape wearing a motorcycle helmet during each of the robberies, FBI spokesman Steve Dupre said.The first robbery was on April 23 at a Washington Mutual Bank in Rancho Cordova, the second was on Aug. 22 at a Wachovia Bank in Gold River.The suspect's description varies.Witnesses from the first robbery said the man was about 5 foot 6 to 5 foot 10, about 150 to 190 pounds with a medium to heavy build. He was seen wearing a black, red and white motorcycle helmet, a dark long-sleeved sweatshirt with a hood, red gloves, relaxed-fit blue jeans and dark shoes with a white ring around the soles.Witnesses from the second robbery said the suspect was a white or Hispanic man, about 5 foot 4 to 5 foot 6, about 140 to 180 pounds with a medium build. He was wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet with a clear lens and the word "Suzuki" printed in white or silver lettering on the back of the helmet, a black long-sleeved sweatshirt with a light colored design, white cloth gloves and faded blue jeans.Dupre said a handgun was seen during the first robbery, and during the second robbery the robber made only a hand gesture to indicate he had a gun in his waistband but no weapon was seen.Anyone with information may call the Sacramento FBI office at the FBI in Sacramento at 916-481-9110.

It been about a week and a half since I've gotten a chance to sit down and write and a little longer since I've posted anything substantial, and I just wanted to let people know I'm not ignoring my blogging. With just 10 days until Heidi and I walk down the isle, my days and nights are filled with wedding preparations, and other things must take a back seat to this hectic and fun process. (insert your own "welcome to marriage" joke here).

But in all seriousness, things are fun and exciting right now, and time is just flying by! I think I will operate on a version of "if you don't have something good to say don't say anything at all"... in that vein I think I will .... see you in three weeks when we get back from Jamaica!

As Hurricane Ike ripped through the gulf coast, gas prices began to do their own tearing at the wallets of drivers. The storm shut down 14 Texas oil refineries forcing the price at the pump to spike to unbelievable numbers; $4.51, $5.25, even $5.49 in Georgia.

If you're saying to yourself, Hey Dave didn't post gas receipts last Friday, you are absolutely right and I apologize. For those who know me, you know that Heidi and my wedding is drawing very close and is now just a short 20 days away, and as it should, it is drawing a lot of my focus.

So over the last two weeks The Scooter took a grand total of $11.93
The truck would have taken 40 gallons at $3.48/gal for a total of $139.20
for a savings this week of... $127.27

and a running total of
$890.55

and a small side note... you may notice that last receipt on 9/11 was at $3.59 a gallon. Thats the Chevron at the corner of York and Stevenson. Buddy, who are you kidding?!?! Every other station I saw around that day was somewhere around $3.44. The only reason I got gas there was because I hadn't been paying attention to my gas gauge that day, and really had no choice.

Just a quick note and apology for the meet we were supposed to have tonight. This little freak couple of days of gross heat and humidity that seems to want to culminate today with temps feeling like around 100 is just no fun to ride in. Sorry to everyone... we'll reschedule.

This Sunday Afternoon is our second meet and scoot event. Once a month we meet in front of the Charles Village Pub in Towson for some scooter talk and an open ride of the area. The ride is open to any and all scooter riders who want to grow the Maryland Scooter Community. If you'd like to join the official meetup.com group click the link to the left, but it's not required, just show up Sunday at 4pm and lets ride!

The seasons are a changing

This entry could almost be filed under driving jackassery, but it's more of a collective shift than any one person being stupid. I noticed it for the first time a week ago Wednesday, also know as the second day of school for much of the area. The traffic patterns along my route had changed, things were more crowded, there were different people doing different things, it was horrible! My nice peaceful summertime commute is changing into a get the kids to school drag race! I'm looking at you Gilman and Roland Park Landrover-Driving-Parents... the right hand driving lane of Roland Ave does not magically become a parking lot because the school's parking lot is full, and you need a place to park!

In happier news this shift has caused me, two days in a row now, to sync up with another scooter rider on my afternoon ride home. The first day we got a chance to have that 30 second red light conversation. I make note of him because he is the first person to tell me he bought his scooter online. I didn't get a chance to hear the brand, although it was a sporty looking 150cc model. He said he got it for around a grand from some company in Texas and that it came to him almost fully assembled and all he had to do was put the front tire on. So thats nice to hear that people are having good experiences with online retailers that many of us are usually skeptical of.

And lastly thanks to the motorcycle guy this morning who gave me the big wave! I was starting to loose faith in your kind.

Fatal Scooter Accident - Berlin MD

There was a fatal accident around 4:30 Sunday morning in Berlin, MD. Police say a car traveling east on Route 50 hit the driver and the passenger on a motor scooter. During the impact both John Dersch and Dennis King were thrown from the scooter. Dersch was pronounced dead on the scene and King was transported to a nearby hospital where he is said to be in serious condition. The condition of the driver of the car is unknown.

Only 1 receipt this week, which I think is a combination of getting gas late last week, and having to drive the truck 3 days this week due to rain ( or at least the threat of ). So to be fair I will deduct the $20 of gas I was forced to put in the truck.

The Scooter took a grand total of $2.81
The truck would have taken 20 gallons at $3.45/gal for a total of $69
for a savings this week of... $66.19 ... less the Andrew Jackson... $46.19

and a running total of
